AMD Acquires Li Feifei's World Model Startup for 55B

What happened

Reports state AMD will acquire World Labs, a spatial intelligence startup founded by Fei-Fei Li in 2024, for approximately $8.2 billion (around 55 billion RMB), with the deal expected to close by the end of 2026. After closing, Fei-Fei Li will join AMD as Executive Vice President and Chief Scientist, reporting directly to CEO Lisa Su. The original core team will be integrated into AMD to form a frontier AI research organization. The two companies will jointly build an end-to-end AI ecosystem spanning hardware, software, and open models. World Labs previously completed three rounds of financing, reaching a post-Series C valuation of $5.4 billion in February 2026.

Background

In early September 2026, Nvidia announced its acquisition of AI open community platform Hugging Face. As the other major player in the GPU market, AMD previously lacked in-house布局 in world models and spatial intelligence, while Nvidia already launched its Cosmos open world model product.
